Keeping the weather out of a listed fort without changing what it is
Specialist restoration works carried out at the former Officers Mess within the exclusive Fort Picklecombe development. The project focused on protecting the apartments from water ingress while preserving the building's historic character and meeting strict English Heritage requirements.
Works included aluminium cladding installation, reworking original lead detailing, construction of two new roofs to current building regulations, coastal grade glass balustrades, and repointing of the original fort stonework using traditional Cornish lime methods.
Exposed sites like this one give no margin for shortcuts: every detail had to satisfy conservation officers and stand up to salt, wind and driven rain coming straight off the water.
